About the Initiatives
32nd Street & 7th Avenue Entrance:
In November 2023, Amtrak completed an accessibility improvement project transforming the 7th Avenue and 32nd Street entrance at New York Penn Station. The enlarged and fully rebuilt entrance expands its width by 50 percent at the nation’s busiest train station, provides natural light and air down into the concourse, and features a fully ADA-accessible and safer experience. Visit Amtrak’s 7th Avenue and 32nd Street Image Gallery to learn more about this ADA-compliant entrance.
East End Gateway and LIRR Concourse Project:
The East End Gateway opened to the public in December 2020. This iconic new 7th Avenue entrance to the existing Penn Station with three escalators and a staircase has increased circulation and provided direct access to the LIRR Concourse. In March 2023, the refurbished LIRR Concourse raised the ceiling height to 18 feet and included the construction of a new elevator and rehabilitation of four existing elevators. Visit the MTA’s Long Island Rail Road Concourse and East End Gateway project page for more information.
Moynihan Train Hall:
Located in the historic Farley Post Office, Moynihan Train Hall opened to the public on New Year’s Day 2021. The Train Hall now serves as Amtrak’s primary customer concourse at Penn Station and is also used by LIRR passengers. This magnificent, new train hall boasts a 92-foot-high skylight dome, 255,000 square-feet of retail, and modern conveniences and amenities. The on-time completion of this major landmark is serving as a catalyst for additional development in the neighborhood. Visit Amtrak’s Moynihan Train Hall project page for more information.
Gateway Program:
The Gateway Program is a series of rail infrastructure projects that will improve the most congested 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor, between Newark, NJ and New York City. Projects such as the Hudson River Tunnel and the Portal North Bridge will improve reliability, add needed resiliency, and create the capacity for a doubling of passenger trains under the Hudson River into New York Penn Station—the nation’s busiest rail facility. Visit Amtrak’s Gateway Program project page for more details.
